Directions: Use this tool that specifically address proper handwashing procedures. Record the instances of correct and complete handwashing. Share your observations with staff and use the information learned from the checklist to identify goals and focus your coaching interactions.
Proper Handwashing Procedures:
Upon entering the classroom or program
Before and after helping a child with toileting or diapering
After using the restroom
Before and after touching animals
When hands are visibly dirty or soiled
After sneezing, coughing into hand, or blowing nose
After helping a child who has sneezed
After coming in from outdoors
Before and after feeding an infant or young child
Before and after helping a child, youth, or staff member who has been injured
After removing disposable gloves
Before and after administering medication
After handling garbage or cleaning
Hands were washed with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
Turned off faucets with paper towels each time
Alcohol-based hand sanitizer was used appropriately (if approved by program and only outdoors when soap and water are not available)
Supports children and youth in following proper procedure for washing their hands
